The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River.
In 1823, Steuben County was reduced in size by the combination of a portion of the county with a portion of Ontario County to form Yates County.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older.

Seneca County lawmakers last week began circulating information about the discussions of income tax options in Tompkins County while making it known that they would be appealing to state representatives to stop any proposal that should come forward.
Discussions by Tompkins County legislators have centered on the notion that those on fixed incomes would pay less in taxes than those who are working and can better afford higher taxes if an income tax were instituted to cap property sales taxes that have steadily increased for years.
Tioga County Manager John Byrne said that Tioga County was unaware of income tax and commuter tax discussions in Tompkins County until an article in the Ithaca Journal explained complaints from Seneca County legislators.

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that 12 New York counties have been declared major disaster areas by the President and will receive federal aid to help repair damages caused by excessive storms and flooding that occurred in May and June.
This funding is made available on a cost-sharing basis and is to be used to fix or replace public facilities that were damaged by the extreme weather of the past two months.
FEMA is still conducting damage surveys in other areas, and may provide additional assistance to other damaged counties in New York.

Hinchey pointed out the logic of centralizing services in Tompkins County since it lies between Schuyler and Cortland counties.
He also described an alternative plan to eliminate FSA service in Tompkins County and divide the county into two separate service areas as potentially "confusing and troublesome for farmers, while creating administrative encumbrances for ongoing work between FSA, the Tompkins County Soil and Water District, and the Natural Resources and Conservation Service."
The Farm Service Agency's mission is to stabilize farm income, help farmers conserve land and water resources, provide credit to new or disadvantaged farmers and ranchers, and help farm operations recover from the effects of disaster.
