A number of Haitians, 20 perhaps, who had tried to flee the Papa Doc regime, which was making life intolerable on their nearby island, had been abandoned on a desolate, uninhabitable part of the island by boatmen who had promised to take them to Nassau where they hoped to start a new life.
They had been rounded up and brought by boat to Matthew Town, where they were met by Ton Ton Macoute, the Haitian paramilitary, who marched them into jail to await a boat from Haiti that would take them home.
Hovering near Ton Ton Macoute was as close as I've ever been to political danger, and contemplating the Haitians' fate was awful.

Mothers throughout Haiti threaten their children with the legend of Ton Ton Macoute, the malevolent spirit who comes in the night and steals bad children from their beds.
What these women and their children do not realize is that the danger is very, very real, and it's not just the bad children who are taken.
And in their hopelessly apolitical way they are willing to serve as the cutting edge: an Irish version of the Ton Ton Macoute determined to protect the venal power structure that sponsors it.
