I suggest that the texts themselves reflect this triune nature of the Quetzalcoatl mythology, and that the key to understanding the particular aspect begin discussed lies in the ascription of the father of Quetzalcoatl in the text.
Tonacatecuhtli is only given as the father of Quetzalcoatl when the context clearly indicates Nicholson's Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl, the wind god.
The main sources to Tonacatecuhtli as the father of Quetzalcoatl are: Historia 1973 p.
