The outlying suburbs of Tonbridge are seen to the north while on the south the unlovely sprawl of the gravelworks and its less lovely bridge present themselves.
The bridge (not the present one, of course) and the castle were the heart of ancient Tonbridge and at one time this part of the river was choked with fishtraps, a local right which is guaranteed by the Magna Carta of 1215.
It is worth noting that Tonbridge is an ancient town whereas its more famous neighbour Tunbridge Wells (a half hour bus ride and well worth the trip) is a johnny-come-lately, not having existed until the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in 1610.
