The City of Manila occupies a unique position in Philippine political geography, for it is both a chartered city, and also it fulfills the functions of a province for the four cities and thirteen municipalities composing its metropolitan area.
Manila City proper is bounded on the north by Navotas and Caloocan City, on the northeast by Quezon City and San Juan del Monte, on the southeast by Mandaluyong and Makati, and on the south by Pasay City.

The Manila fire chief said that firefighters convinced about 50 residents to demolish their shanties to stop the flames from jumping to other houses.

ACTING on reports that several people in Balut, Tondo, Manila have died or were hospitalized allegedly due to contaminated water, the Maynilad Water Company on Wednesday announced that it will commence water rationing in the affected community.
Manila health officials have sought the help of the Department of Health's epidemiology division to determine whether the cases included cholera.
Records at the Manila Division of Preventable Diseases showed that 115 were confined at the San Lazaro Hospital, 26 at the Gat Andres Bonifacio Hospital, 13 at the Ospital ng Tondo, 41 at the Mary Johnston Hospital, and 20 at the Tondo General Hospital.

By 1970 it was clear to the thousands of poor families in the Tondo foreshore area along Manila Bay that, despite their many protests, the Government intended to demolish their homes and relocate them 40-45 km from the city.
At this point, a group of both Catholic and Protestant priests who had worked with the people for years, helped them to form the Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO), a federation of neighbourhood organizations that would be democratic and strong enough to be taken seriously by the government.
ZOTO was able to drive a wedge between the government and the founders of the project, namely the German Government and the World Bank.

FIRE hit the Baseco compound in Tondo, Manila, after midnight Monday, leaving an estimated 4,500 homeless.
There were no reported casualties in the fire, which reached the highest alert level.
Dinky Soliman said volunteers and Manila City Government officials have set up a command center at Baseco to identify the families affected by the fire.

A Speeding cargo truck hit and killed and elderly couple while they were crossing a street in Tondo, Manila late Wednesday.
Police identified the fatalities as Francisco Limon, 71, and is spouse Carmelita, 72, both of 176 Biak-na bato Street, in Tondo.
Francisco died on the spot while Carmelita was rushed to the Metropolitan Hospital where she expired later.

In an earlier interview on Tuesday over radio dzBB, Maynilad officials admitted that the water pipes in the Tondo district were old but that they could not do any repairs or changes because of lack of funds.
