The Florentine Tondo fills a major gap in Florentine artistic and cultural history, collating documentary, textual, and artistic material with new evidence and discoveries about patronage, location, function, and iconography; it also charts the patterns of tondi production and establishes their meaning within a cultural context.
Technical information and bibliography is provided for each tondo, making a significant contribution to the understanding of this specific genre as well as to Italian Renaissance art and culture in general.
Roberta Olson explores an important phenomenon in Italian Renaissance art: the fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century flowering of the tondo (or circular) form in painting and sculpture, which represented the Renaissance ideal of the perfect form.

It will be demonstrated that the size and portability of the objects incorporat ing tondo reliefs into their designs are a factor in the iconography of both subjects until the late Hellenistic period, when large-scale sculptures played a role in augmenting the existing iconographical treatment.
Two specific subjects: the monster Scylla and the riding Nereids atop sea creatures, are incorporated into the tondo format beginning in the fifth century B.C. But it is in the fourth century, and throughout the Hellenistic period that both motifs are encountered in their greatest numbers.

Both the tondo and the painted cassone panel were treated in comprehensive, cataloguing monographs early in the 20th century: Moritz Hauptmann's Der Tondo: Ursprung und Bedeutung und Geschichte des italienischen Rundbildes in Relief und Malerei (Frankfurt, 1936) and Paul Schubring's Cassoni: Truhen und Truhenbilder der italienische Fruhrenaissance (Leipzig, 1915, 1923).
Olson devotes a chapter to the philology and usage of the term tondo, noting that the earliest textual incidence of the word is found in dolce stil nuovo verse, where it connoted the cosmos, completeness, and perfection.
