		All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances, but not every language uses tone to distinguish lexical meaning.
		When this occurs, tones are phonemes (discrete speech sounds), just like consonants and vowels, and they are occasionally referred to as tonemes.

		Norwegian has a distinction between tonemes 1 and 2 in polysyllabic words only, in monosyllabic words there is no toneme distinction, and for phonetic and other reasons, one often reckons that all monosyllabic words have toneme 1.
		The standard example of the toneme opposition in Norwegian is the distinction between /1boner/ 'farmers' and /2boner/ 'beans' (the /o/ is actually a roundeddistinction between /1boner/ 'farmers' and /2boner/ 'beans' (the /o/ is front high-mid vowel, like German o with an umlaut).
		If these words occur as the second element in compounds however, the toneme distinction is lost, e.g./2he:dmarks,boner/ may mean either 'farmers from Hedmark' or 'beans from Hedmark'.

		As we know, in the case of chinese, the syllable tone IS a kind of phoneme(suprasegmental).The fact that it does not take any additional time to produce does not follow that it is not a phoneme.
		As for whether it can also be termed "toneme", it is merely a matter of concept.
