OASYS PCI Troubleshooting - Tonewheel Organ
Since the tonewheels may be shared between several different notes, a normal microtonal scale does not make sense; you can't detune one note without affecting all of the others.
Calling up the Tonewheel Organ automatically allocates all 91 tonewheels, all of which can be played simultaneously.
Since all 91 tonewheels are always being produced, voice allocation settings are ignored.

A tonewheel is a relatively primitive apparatus for generating electronic musical notes.
The tonewheel assembly consists of a synchronous AC motor and an associated gearbox that drives a series of rotating disks.
A tonewheel was used in the Teleharmonium and in the original Hammond organs.

 Synthesizing Tonewheel Organs
The waveform and frequency of the signal is determined by the shape of the wheel and the number of 'bumps' that pass the tip of the magnet every second.
Given that in the finished instrument, all the tonewheels are mounted on a single axle, different frequencies are obtained not by using different rotation speeds, but by using tonewheels of different sizes and geometries.
Figure 8 (on the next page) shows an advanced version of this idea, with the oscillators' pitches fixed to the drawbars' pitch relationships, and a voltage-controlled mixer that allows you to mix the oscillators' outputs just as you would if you were clutching a fistful of drawbars.

The B4 is a complete virtual tonewheel organ, capable of reproducing in authentic detail the sound of the legendary B3 organ and rotating speaker cabinet.
Classic tonewheel organs were limited to a fixed tuning, since the tonewheels run at a fixed synchronous speed that cannot be changed.
The filter capacitor in Hammond tonewheel generators deteriorate with age, which over time leads to an increase in leakage and rattle in the basic tone sound.

Tonewheel -   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Each disk contains a set of bumps that generate a specific frequency through a corresponding pickup assembly, consisting of a magnet and coil.
Tonewheel leakage occurs in the Hammond organ and in similar situations, where the large number of tonewheels causes pickups to overhear other tonewheels than their own.
On some digital simulations of Hammond organs tonewheel leakage is a user-set parameter.

 HammondWiki - Tone Wheel
Each tonewheel is a disc of soft iron with a diameter of approximately 2 inches.
The number of bumps or "teeth" on a tonewheel is 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and as an exception of the power of 2 series, 192.
These tonewheels use 192 teeth instead of 256 because the machinery used to cut the tonewheels could not cut 256 bumps in a diameter of only 2".

 Ken Griffin (Instruments He Played)
If, for example, a tonewheel rotates at a speed which causes four-hundred forty teeth to pass the tip of the magnet each second, then an alternating current voltage will be induced into the coil, and it will have a frequency of 440 Hertz, or Hz, which is the accepted term for cycles per second.
Thus, these double-ply tonewheel sets generate two pitches in the same coil, whose frequencies are very close, but obviously not exactly the same, which is a necessary condition for chorusing as we stated at the "basics" section that preceded the Wurlitzer portion of these articles.
The individual pairs of tonewheels in the main Hammond generator run at each of twelve different speeds, determined by the number of teeth on the individual drive gears and the bakelite gears.

HammondWiki - What Is A Hammond Organ
The Hammond ToneWheel organ, first introduced by LaurensHammond in April 1935, is the one against which all contenders are measured.
The ToneGenerator assembly consists of an AC SynchronousMotor connected to a geartrain which drives a series of ToneWheels, each of which rotates adjacent to a MagnetAndCoil assembly (similar to an electric guitar pickup).
The number of bumps on each tonewheel in combination with the rotational speed set by the GearRatio between the DrivingGear and the DrivenGear determines the pitch produced by a particular tonewheel assembly.

The classic tonewheel organs were only capable of generating a single basic sine wave shape but we have implemented a range of colors to enable you to create a multitude of other organ sounds and colors not normally available with a single hardware organ.
No tonewheel organ would be caught dead without a rotary cabinet connected and lurking in the vicinity and the NB-3 of course has a great rotary simulation that won't put you in hospital each time you physically move your music project.
When we were designing the NB-3 we decided to add the rotary cabinet as an effect element (Rotary Speaker 2) rather than integrate it into the NB-3 User Interface, the reason being that Rotary cabinets are very useful for other types of sounds and not just organs.

The shaft and gear noise depends on the gearing used to drive the tonewheels - I have also noticed slight variations in pitch.

In later generators, tonewheel frequencies were grouped and their physical locations moved to different 'galleries' within the generator minimize this problem.
