  Tongareva Island
Tongareva (or Penrhyn Island) is a large atoll, the northern side of which is 537 nautical miles south of the equator.
The native name, Tongareva, means "floating Tonga," and was given to the atoll by the Polynesian discoverers.
Tradition states that they came to Tongareva from Manihiki, although darker skin and a different dialect have led to statements that they are of a different stock.

 Cook Islands and the Blackbirders
Byrne decided to stop over at the atoll of Tongareva in the northern Cook Group, which lay on their route in order to investigate the commercial possibilities of their lagoon, known to contain the beche-de-mer and pearl-shell.
The first ship to then arrive at Tongareva was the brig Trujillo who kidnapped a local chief as interpreter, with his wife and two boys, before joining the Apurimac and Manuelita Costas off Manihiki, where they hoped to be the first to recruit from this island.
Tongareva is the largest atoll in the Cook Group and its characteristic pattern of dispersed settlement had led to the population living on their coconut land holdings scattered around the lagoon, rather than in villages as on the smaller atolls.

In a recent survey by the Ministry of Marine Resources, the broodstock trochus are mainly distributed on the west side of the lagoon, along the islet where Omoka, the Tongareva Marine Research Centre [TMRC] and the airport are located.
At the end of the first week of November 1996 there were 43 trochus collected from the corals on the reef front outside of TMRC.
In future it is hoped that a proper study will be conducted to look at the advantage of having trochus and pearl oyster spat in polyculture with regards to control of filamentous algae, especially around pearl oyster spat.
