Tongji University (同济大学) is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education in China.
There are also three university hospitals located in different campuses.
The university now registers over 50,000 students at all levels from certificate and diploma courses to Bachelors Degrees, Masters, Ph.D. programs and post doctoral attachments.

Meetings were held with members of major design institutes at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at Tongji University in Shanghai.
An agreement was reached between MIT faculty, engineering colleagues at Tsinghua University and Tongji University, and the two design institutes to develop demonstration projects for sustainable buildings.
With support from Tsinghua University, MIT will conduct a series of workshops intended to educate both developers and architects in China as to technologies and design approaches utilized during this project.

The management of the university wished to build residences of high quality that would be seen as flats rather than dormitories.

The leadership course is being run by a faculty drawn from a dozen universities and educational institutes in the region, as part of a teaching consortium created by the UNEP-Tongji Institute.
Most faculty members are members of the university consortium and are providing their teaching inputs on a voluntary basis, expecting to learn from each other’s approaches and the improvisations the course will demand.

 UN ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME AND TONGJI UNIVERSITY OPEN NEW CHINESE INSTITUTE TO AID ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
SHANGHAI, BANGKOK, 9 May (UNEP) –- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Shanghai’s Tongji University today announced the establishment of the UNEP-Tongji Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development.
UNEP Executive Director Klaus Toepfer and Tongji University President Professor Wu Qidi signed a letter of agreement on establishment of the new Institute this morning.  Minister of the State Environment Protection Administration (SEPA) Xie Zhenhua, Vice Mayor of Shanghai Han Zhen, and other Chinese Government officials attended the signing ceremony held at Tongji University.
The supervisory board for the new Institute will comprise officials from UNEP and Tongji University, as well as experts in the fields of environmental protection, design and management.  The board will hold it first meeting in October or November this year.
