Tongue River (Montana) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tongue River is a tributary of the Yellowstone, approximately 265 mi (426 km) long, in the U.S. states of Wyoming and Montana.
At the Battle of the Tongue River, Brigadier General Patrick Edward Connor routed an Indian force along the river on August 29, 1865.
Then on August 4, 1873, the river was again the site of an engagement between the U.S. Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer and the Sioux, prior to the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The Tongue River Railroad Company, Inc.’s (TRRC’s) rail line project located in Custer, Big Horn, Powder River, and Rosebud Counties, Montana, is the subject of three separate applications, known as Tongue River I, Tongue River II, and Tongue River III.
The overall purpose of Tongue River I, Tongue River II, and Tongue River III is to transport coal from mines in the Powder River Basin and Tongue River Valley to markets in the Midwest and northeastern states.
In 1998, TRRC filed an application, Tongue River III, with the Board seeking authority to construct and operate a 17.3-mile line of railroad, known as the Western Alignment, which is an alternative routing for the southernmost portion of the 41-mile Ashland-to-Decker rail line.

So based on this estimated water balance, approximately 280 cfs is diverted between the Reservoir and Miles City during the irrigation season and about 110 cfs of return flow occurs for a net withdrawal of 174 cfs.
If one graphs the average net chnage in flow recorded from the Tongue River Reservoit to Miles City, the decrease in flow from irrigation withdrawals (or other losses) from May 1 to the end of September range from nil to around 400 cfs.
If the entire TDS load from the diverted water remains in the return flow, and the average flow at the Dam is 400 cfs then the EC should increase by about 70 to 80 % due to irrigation while the TDS load remains unchanged.

Muggli's family well drew water out of the same aquifer that is currently being drawn down for coal-bed methane development and released into reservoirs in the drainage of the Tongue River, which runs across southern Montana and northern Wyoming.
On Jan. 1, after more than two years in court, the NPRC and Fidelity agreed on a settlement that categorizes the drainages in which Fidelity built its reservoirs as "waters of the United States," a technical classification placing them under the authority of the Clean Water Act.
Fidelity may stop at the Montana border, the Tongue River and its development dilemmas do not, and the case has drawn attention to what a broader application of the Clean Water Act could mean to Wyoming's coal-bed methane play.

Because the Tongue runs through the greatest portion of the formation, it is likely to suffer the greatest impact.
The Tongue River arises in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming and flows northeast through the Big Horn Mine at Sheridan, Wyoming into Montana where it eventually joins with the Yellowstone River (see map, Figure 1).
The substrate of the new river channel contained relatively uniform layers of topsoil, gravel, and small to medium cobble (Wentworth: 32-129 mm diameter).

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 11:51:20 AM At the most recent Yellowstone Compact Commission meeting a Wyoming DEQ representative indicated they would be using an SAR standard of 3 on the Tongue River at the stateline.
The Wyoming DEQ indicated this is the standard they will use, regardless of any Montana SAR standards for downstream portions of the Tongue River.
This appears to provide very little assimilative capacity for the lower Tongue, seeing that the monthly average standard is an SAR of 3, with no sample exceeding 4.5 during the irrigation season (March 2nd to Oct. 31st).

The energy development firm obtained seven oil and gas leases from the state in 2002, but its attorneys later found an apparent conflict in ownership in a federal order signed in 1900 that said the tribe held interest in at least half the width of the bed.
The leases, which are in the bed of the Tongue River in southeast Montana, were issued "subject to any incursion by the Northern Cheyenne Reservation," the court document said.
The river forms the eastern boundary of the reservation, and the tribe maintained that it held interest in at least half the width of the riverbed.
