  Cardiff Railway
The Cardiff Railway was planned as a rival to the Taff Valley Railway in terms of extracting coal and for passenger transport.
The rest of the cutting is heavily overgrown and partly infilled, emerging as a slight depression in the trees onton the realigned Cemetery road just north of the A470 overpass.
Where the road is spilt level, the upper carriageway follows the trackbed around Tongwynlais as far as the site of the station, which was closed in 1953.

Band fever rapidly spread around the village of Tongwynlais which was also home to a thriving Temperance movement.
So with numerous donations by the local gentry in Tongwynlais, Radyr, Whitchurch and Taffs Well, The Tongwynlais Temperance Silver Band was born.
Rehearsals were held at the Tongwynlais Infants School and in the long room of the Lewis Arms public house until 1925 when the first band hall was built on Castle Road on ground donated by Col. Lewis.

WHITCHURCH is a parish and pleasant village in the hundred of Caerphilly, county of Glamorgan, situated in the beautiful vale of the Taff, and intersected by the high road from Cardiff to Merthyr.
TONGWYNLAIS is a considerable village, mostly in the above parish, and partly in that of Eglwysilan, about 5 miles from Cardiff, and half-a-mile from the railway station at Walnut Tree Bridge.
Castell Coch, or the Red Castle, is seated on a considerable eminence, near the village, embosomed in trees, and commanding a fine view of the Taff vale and the Bristol channel.

I discovered the footpath behind it, and remembering that a "footpath" is actually a "public right of way", I hoisted my bike over the stile, and into the fields beyond.
This passed the end of the gully, before emerging in Tongwynlais.

The castle was built on earlier foundations of a medieval structure, and W. Burges' design incorporates a fully operational drawbridge and circular towers crowned by conical roofs.
Located a few miles north of the city (close to the village of Tongwynlais), the fairytale castle is now maintained CADW (Welsh Historical Monuments).
Although the castle looks somewhat Disney-tastic, it was rebuilt from the ruins of a medieval castle and, with a few exceptions, its external appearance is reasonably authentic.

In around 1866 it seems that there was considerable consternation in the area after the ghost was said to have been seen on several occasions both on the road and in surrounding woods and fields.
It turned out to be an impoverished mad woman who lived in the neighbourhood and whose wont it was to wander about the area at night, even in the most inclement weather.

Amelia Walters found sympathy cards opened, checks written to charities in honor of her husband ripped up and even the clothes her husband was wearing when he collapsed from a stroke pulled out of a suitcase, the South Wales Echo reported.
Walters joined the Home Guard at the age of 15 and two years later lied about his age and enlisted in the Navy.

Administrative/Biographical history: Salem English Baptist Chapel, Tongwynlais, Glamorgan, was a daughter church of Ainon Welsh Baptist chapel, Tongwynlais.
During the 1850s, there was a considerable influx of population to Tongwynlais resulting from industrial development at Pentyrch and Melingriffith, and many of the incoming population were monoglot English.
Over time, some of the English Baptists expressed a desire for religious worship in their own language and a new chapel was duly opened in Queen Street (then known as Ivy Street) in 1862.
