Toni Collette Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Toni Collette was born on the 1st of November, 1972, in western Sydney, Australia.
Toni would have to lose far more than the extra 40 pounds to appear in more glamorous roles, as in Velvet Goldmine, and her fluctuating weight seriously distorted her self-image, leading her to suffer from panic attacks and bulimia throughout her early twenties.
Toni moved on to The Boys, a really gritty drama where a psycho is released from jail into Sydney's western suburbs, meets up with his equally rough brothers, the three having no real power but rocketing levels of testosterone.

"Toni's got that Aussie good nature, but she's also a hot babe," says Diaz, who was impressed by Collette's go-for-broke approach to the role that required her to gain 30 pounds.
Rolling her eyes, Collette complains that the only help she received afterward from the movie studio to take off the weight was a rented elliptical trainer.
When not acting, Collette leads a relatively quiet life in Sydney, where she and her husband of nearly three years, musician Dave Galafassi, are collaborating on an album of "moody pop rock" songs Collette wrote; they've started a band enigmatically called Toni Collette and the Finish.

Toni Collette continues to shine in "Japanese Story," but it's a rather arid tale of a Japanese man and an Australian woman stranded in the outback.
Likewise Collette was notable in "The Hours" (a film I didn't much care for either; she played the trussed-up Kitty Barlowe) and simply wonderful in "About a Boy" (one of my ten best films of 2002).
Collette's appropriately named Sandy is "volunteered" by her boss (Bill Baird) into driving prospective client Tachibana Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) around in the outback in a rented Toyota 4-Runner.

But the main reason to see this mood piece is Toni Collette, who creates a vivid character, by turns rowdy and contemplative, a woman who sees life as a lark and discovers that there may be something more to it.
Toni Collette is absolutely natural and unvarnished as a brash and somewhat crude young woman who makes it quite clear she doesn't relish a trip in the desert with this Japanese bloke, whoever he is and however important he might be to her firm.
One must understand the Japanese mentality to truly grasp the meaning of what Sandy did and why, for she was able to figure out the Japanese way and how important it was to Hiromitsu's wife, who would have to deal with a lot of unanswered questions in her heart for the rest of her life.
