 Tonic Interview : Music Frisk
Tonic, fresh off the release of their new album Head on Straight, were recently in Chicago to play an acoustic set in Nordstrom's lingerie department.
As far as how it affects the band, it's been pretty good, the guys fly down when it's their turn, it's kind of like having custody with a child.
We're one of the bands that came up and we had a string of hits and a lot of people didn't know it was the same band.

Ken Phillips Publicity Group - Tonic
Tonic first came together back in 1993, but it wasn't until their debut album, Lemon Parade, came out in 1996 that they broke into the world of major-label success, courtesy of the hit single, "If You Could Only See".
The band showed a tendency to fall into sounding a bit too much like Dave Matthews, something which colored the second half of their set more than the first, but, overall, both their material and performance was strong.
While most rock-rooted bands are pushing to bang their heads as hard as they can in light of current radio trends, the easy breezes and tropical views apparently steered Tonic in a more melodic direction.

Gin & Tonic - Official Home Page
The band had a new gig at Pier 113 again in June the 27th, but the show was not as good as the precedent one, also because Alessandra, the vocalist, felt ill; so, after the performance, she had no more voice to speak for some days (and her husband got some relax...).
The band performed in a pretty decent way, anyway, but was not very satisfied, as for the previous gig, and did not play with a lot of feeling, even for the loss of groove of its bass player, Nicola.
The 21st would be on a Monday, so the band decided to have a gig (at Caruso) on Sunday the 20th: it would be enough to play until midnight to reach the 21st...

The opening band, Santa Barbara's Summercamp, provided fresh and loud material from its debut album, "Fresh Juice." The crowd, much of which was familiar with the power-pop outfit, clearly enjoyed the half-hour set.
But whenever the band began to play, the audience, whether they were fans or not, immersed themselves in Tonic's music, thanks to the brilliant strobe effects and color patterns that covered the walls.
Although Tonic is probably a bit heavy to those unfamiliar with Led Zepplin-influenced rock, Tonic gradually pulls you into its music with its honest, upbeat and compelling songs.

Russo was an integral member of this team with his already impressive songwriting and vocals, topping his contribution off by wrapping his trademark harmonic guitar layers around Tonics' already complex, and "smarter than your average hit" lyrics and melodies.

Like freak-groove cosmonauts, Medeski, Martin, and Wood descended on Manhattan's Tonic on March 7th and 8th in a valiant effort to save the city's most unquestionably bitchin' jazz club from a heinously premature demise.
The band was joined by the perennial DJ Logic and Club d'Elf percussionist/oud player (oudist?) Brahim Fribgane, and followed something like a standard path for a heavily improvised set: chaos to form.
Let's hope that Tonic's threatened closing turns out to be just another excuse to put on some really good concerts (though a monthly high-profile benefit/rent party would be a damn fine reason for MMW -- or any of the big names Tonic has drawn lately -- to come back sometime).
