Tonnelle Circle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tonnelle Circle (pronounced tunnel-ee or tawn-uh-lee) is an intersection in Jersey City, New Jersey.
When the Skyway was built, the old connection to Tonnelle Circle became a left-side exit and entrance ramp to the Circle, with the Skyway passing over the Circle.
However, the circle was named after the street, and the street was probably named after a John Tonnelle, who died in 1846, or one of his descendants.

U.S. Route 1-9 Truck (Jersey City, New Jersey) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TRUCK US 1-9 is the route that trucks must use between the eastern edge of Newark, New Jersey and Tonnelle Circle in Jersey City, New Jersey, due to trucks being banned from the Pulaski Skyway (starting in early 1934), which carries the main routes of U.S. Route 1 and US 9.
West (signed south) of the intersection with SR 440, the road was Route 25M (it had been Route 25 until that was moved to the Pulaski Skyway), and north of Route 440, it was part of Route 1, which continued south on Route 440 and north on U.S. Route 1/US 9 from Tonnelle Circle.
The part south of Route 440 was part of the Lincoln Highway, and still has that name in Kearny.

Tonnele Avenue (yes, one l for the Avenue, two l's for the Circle) has long been US 1&9, and has long been over capacity, being only four narrow lanes with no hope of widening.
I don't remember when I took this photo, but given that US 1&9 generally has no left turns south of the Tonnelle Circle, I'm guessing it points down US 9 at the southern split.

In January, NJ Transit will open a new light rail station and park-and-ride along a stretch of Routes 1&9 in Hudson County where the state transportation department is about to begin a 42-month road reconstruction project, according to the Star-Ledger.
That means commuters heading to the new station will have to make their way through congestion-causing lane closures on a state highway -- also known as Tonnelle Avenue -- that is already notorious for traffic jams and accidents.
Transportation officials put the light rail station toward the northern end of Tonnelle Avenue to avoid being near the infamous Tonnelle Circle, where grueling rush-hour traffic jams are routine.
