The Tonto National Forest boundaries are Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian Reservation to the east.
At 2,969,602 acres (12,018 km²), Tonto National Forest is the largest of the six national forests in Arizona, and has interesting, diverse scenery, with elevation ranging from 1,400 feet (427 m) in the Sonoran Desert to pine-forested mountains on the Mogollon Rim (pronounced muggy-own) at 7,400 feet (2,256 m).
The Tonto is the fifth largest national forest in the United States and is managed by USDA Forest Service.

 Shooting Banned in Tonto National Forest near Phoenix
Tonto National Forest officials this week banned shooting on 80,000 acres of the forest's lands near Valley cities.
Tonto officials have forbidden shooting in areas east of Carefree, north of Scottsdale and west of Bartlett Lake in the Cave Creek Ranger District.
Forest officials in the Cave Creek and Mesa ranger districts have been grapping with dispersed shooting for several years.

Steep hills and canyons make most of the wooded land towards the north of the Tonto National Forest quite inaccessible, and the few paved roads are rather winding and not conducive to speedy cross-country travel.
Depending on which dimension is used as a measurement, Tonto is the worlds largest travertine bridge - 180 feet high, 400 feet long and about 100 feet thick on top.
The creek actually runs a hundred feet lower in a narrow gorge, the edge of which is hidden by trees, flows under the bridge beneath the meadow and continues downstream through a rather wider canyon.

27, 2004 12:00 AM Dry vegetation and high winds combined Sunday to fuel the growth of a wildfire in the Tonto National Forest to more than 10,000 acres, officials said.
