The night's biggest winner was the musical The Light in the Piazza, a romance set in Italy, which took home six Tonys in all, including Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Victoria Clark, who plays a mother accompanying her mentally challenged daughter on a European vacation.
Nominations for the Tony Awards are made by a group of about 30 theater professionals and the winners are voted upon by about 750 journalists and theatrical types.

Although it could theoretically break the record of all-time Tony champ "The Producers" (which won 12 in 2001), it would require an unlikely tie between two nominated "Hairspray" actors (Dick Latessa and Corey Reynolds) who are competing for best featured actor in a musical.
When the final award is given -- in the category of best musical -- "Hairspray" should be the proud owner of at least eight Tonys.
Although "Millie" won for best musical last year, "Urinetown" took best book, best score and best director, which split the prizes in an almost Solomonic fashion (which, by the way, was predicted here).
