The Tony Award for Best Revival was presented from 1977 until 1994, when it was split up int the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
If there are few enough revivals, it is possible under the current Tony rules for the "Best Revival of a Play or Musical" award to return.
The award was given to the best play, musical or non-musical, which had already appeared on Broadway in a previous production.

Also still on Broadway, it received a Tony nomination for best musical and nine other nominations in 2001, but lost to "The Producers," which swept every category for which it was nominated.
The show has not yet had a chance to win an award for best musical, but it received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination as this year's outstanding off-Broadway musical, for which winners will be announced on Tuesday.

With music and lyrics by Cole Porter, the story basically plays out as a show within a show.
A group of actors are putting on a musical version of William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." However, as with most theater companies, more drama is brewing behind the stage than on it.
It is no wonder that the show won the Tony for best costume design.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Royal National Theatre of Great Britain's acclaimed revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" will come from Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, to the University of Iowa for four performances -- at 8 p.m.
A Tony Award also went to the production design by Bob Crowley, who based his stunning scenic visions -- intended to show "how earth would look from heaven" -- on the work of American painters including Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer and Iowa's own Grant Wood.
