Tony Banks (musician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tony Banks (born March 27, 1950) is a classically-trained songwriter, pianist and keyboard player who is best known as one of the founding members of — and many say the driving musical force behind — Genesis, one of England's most famous and successful progressive rock/pop groups.
Banks attended Charterhouse School in the mid-1960s, where he met fellow student Peter Gabriel in 1965.
In its early progressive years, Banks' songwriting heavily influenced Genesis' musical direction, and his elaborate keyboard solos — such as the piano intro to "Firth of Fifth" and the instrumental section of "The Cinema Show" — were one of the hallmarks that established the band's larger-than-life sound.

Tony’s first non-Genesis outing was the music for the film ‘The Shout’, co-written with Mike Rutherford and the first production of Jeremy Thomas, who later went on to produce ‘The Last Emperor’.
His next album was ‘Soundtracks’ (1986), a collection of Tony’s music from the films ‘Quicksilver’ and ‘Lorca And The Outlaws’, featuring collaborations with Fish, Toyah and Jim Diamond.
Tony next used the band name ‘Bankstatement’ (1989) for an album with the same title.

Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks has always expressed interest in composing music for films, but, regretfully, he hasn't been given the opportunity too often (his score for the film "2010" was ultimately dropped in favor of David Shire's, which I still consider a great musical loss).
Banks has admitted that scoring a movie can be a frustrating experience because he has to place his musical desires second to what is needed in the particular movie.
Banks is soon coming out with a "classical suites" album of his own compositions with an orchestra.

For nearly thirty years Tony Banks was the keyboard player, principal songwriter and pivotal force in Genesis, the rock band he co-founded whilst at Charterhouse School with Peter Gabriel and Mike Rutherford.
Always the quiet man of the group, Banks would often be hidden behind his keyboards and synthesisers preferring to shun the limelight in favour of his more extrovert colleagues.
Seven: A Suite for Orchestra represents not only Banks’ first major musical project since Genesis went their separate ways in the late 1990’s but also his first complete work for symphony orchestra.

Listening to these two in particular is a pure joy; it reminds you of Banks' gift for utilizing just the right relationship of chords and structure, in a way that is simple but of tremendous appeal.
The orchestral arrangements tend to be dominated by the string section and are conservatively styled, carrying the compositions in a manner that is functional and unobtrusive.
These are less varied and less colorful than compared to, say, the arrangements of Tarka, by Banks' ex-bandmate Anthony Phillips, an album where acoustic guitars, oboe, flute, violin all get space to breathe, but are also well-integrated towards dancing with the orchestra.

Banks moves further away from his Genesis roots here, especially in prog terms, but even in terms of melodic pop.
As for TONY’s voice, it’s surely not stunning but it does have its charms; I personally prefer it to all the average vocalists he has hired over the years.
— Not the runaway success it might have been, "The Fugitive" is still the best of the Tony BANKS solo efforts, featuring melodic and magical pop songs that work their way under the skin despite his somewhat limited voice.

Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks began his solo career with 1979's "A Curious Feeling." This is an outstanding solo debut for Banks, and, of all his solo albums, "A Curious Feeling" is the most progressive-sounding, the one that sounds the most like vintage Genesis.
Not only is Tony's songwriting and keyboard-playing here superb (as always), but he also proves himself on this album to be a fine guitarist and bass player.
With some extra help from Genesis' touring drummer Chester Thompson and singer Kim Beacon, Tony delivers such stunning tracks as the instrumentals "From The Undertow," "Forever Morning," and the truly gorgeous "Waters Of Lethe," as well as great melodic songs like "Lucky Me" (which *could* have been a hit single), and the title tune.

I don't think he's going to light the NFL on fire or anything but if Jay Fiedler can keep a starting job as long as he did then somewhere someone would be better of giving Tony Banks a shot than starting whatever they've got.

Splendid Magazine reviews Tony Banks: Seven: A Suite for Orchestra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Rock musicians who dabble in classical composition usually produce mawkish New Age doodling, but Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks has always written intricate harmonic progressions and complex textural arrangements that demanded proper orchestration.
Moments on "Spring Tide" recall his work with middle-period Genesis circa Trick of the Tail -- only now, instead of analog synths, we are treated to real strings playing the lush harmonies and real flutes taking over the solos.
Much of this sounds like it lives in the stylistic gamut of film music, which is just fine; in fact, "Earthlight"'s sweeping melody made me hope that Banks someday gets a chance to score a big Hollywood epic.
