He also proved a natural musician, absorbing classical as well as pop and rock material seemingly effortlessly, in the eyes of his friends -- at 16, he could play anything that was on the charts, and was also conversant with generations of church music and concert works, and what lay behind their sounds.
Banks was also less than comfortable with Charterhouse's academic regimen, and he rebelled by way of music, forming a rock band called the Garden Wall with his classmate and new friend Peter Gabriel, and drummer Chris Stewart.
On their earliest sides, Banks played piano, organ, and some Mellotron, as well as guitar, and also contributed to the backing vocals -- just as those early sides by the fledgling group were a kind of Bee Gees/Moody Blues pastiche, so Banks' playing was somewhere midway between that of Maurice Gibb and Mike Pinder.

 Tony Banks
Of all the musicians that once were a member of Genesis Tony Banks (born on 27 March 1950 in East Hoathly, Sussex) can be considered to be the soul of the band.
Banks' final attempt to make a name for himself outside the Genesis-context was Strictly Inc. This record contains Banks' longest composition ever put on record ('An island in the darkness', over 17 minutes), and is generally speaking a nice album, but doesn't come close to Still, mainly due to the rather poor vocals.
Tony Banks can be considered to be the prime example of the brilliant musician who tried so hard as a solo artist to create music that would be appreciated across the globe, only to end up neglecting his artistic genius.

 Tony Banks - Biography (engl.)
It is a shame, really, that Tony’s role in Genesis is appreciated only by fans and the odd critic, when it was in fact he who was the dominant influence on the music of Genesis throughout the history of the band and unimpressed by any change of lineup.
Tony changed some of the lyrics, though, because there was a musical in London that was based on the story as well, so that there was no connection anymore.
Tony had worked on the score for almost six months, writing two hours’ worth of music, but whatever he sent to Hollywood was rejected and in the end Tony’s music was not used for the film.

Now This log: Comment on 'Music: Tony Banks' Seven, others'
Banks I'd say it was by Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Glinka, Waugham Williams, Michael Tippet or John Williams, from time to time.
Banks is (as we all know) a very talented melody thinker and gifted harmonist, but it takes much more than this to write something that can really say something new in the perspective of 500 years of "classical" music, or at least outstand a bit from the ocean of music composed until now.
In fact I cant get rid of the suspicion that Banks just wanted to play with a new toy, being now 50 and, I imagine, somewhat bored by the last 15 years of Genesis music, which, we have to admit it, is much less demanding (and less satisfactory to the ears) than the former one.
