  Tony Hatch
Tony Hatch spent the next three years as a musician with the Coldstream Guards, a role he was able to combine with a part-time position at Top Rank.
Tony also became one of her regular songwriting partners, in addition to supplying English words for many of the numbers Petula had penned with French lyricists.
Recently, Tony Hatch found himself back in the public consciousness and the charts when the title track of his 'Sounds Of The Seventies' album was sampled and revamped as 'Before You Leave' by Pepe Deluxe for the Levi's Engineered Jeans ad campaign.

Tony Hatch - Biography - AOL Music
Although Tony Hatch had success in various segments of the entertainment industry from the '60s onwards, he'll be best remembered for his work as a producer and songwriter for several British pop and rock stars in the '60s.
Hatch started notching up successes as a songwriter in the early '60s, including Garry Mills' "Look for a Star." His most significant role in straight British rock music was as producer during the Searchers' 1963-66 commercial prime, a span which saw them ring up all of their big hits.
In addition to producing, Hatch was vital to Clark as a songwriter, supplying, either as sole author or co-writer (sometimes with Clark herself), much of her best material: "Downtown," "My Love," "I Know a Place," "Call Me," and "A Sign of the Times," to name just the most celebrated examples, are all Hatch compositions.

Call Me: The Songs of Tony Hatch - Tony Hatch - Song Listings
The Burt Bacharach of Britain, Tony Hatch lacked the range of the Bacharach/David hit machine but did a splendid job of evoking swinging '60s suburbia for the large audience (mostly radio and mostly older) incapable of digesting the Animals or the Angry Young Them.
Hatch's effervescent sound, pitched halfway between adult pop and teen pop, possessed the energy of rock & roll but lacked the confrontational nature of many beat groups.
After Hatch's production on the harmony gem "Sugar and Spice" by the Searchers became a hit, he also recorded similar harmony nuggets on a variety of groups, some of which rivaled the original ("Major to Minor" by the Settlers and "Run to Me" by the Montanas).

Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent were married at the time of their 1967 album The Two of Us.
While Hatch had released some instrumental easy listening albums under his own name, this was the first time he'd sung anything but background vocals on record.
Understandably, however, his singing was somewhat subservient to Trent's, who had already scored hits in the U.K. with Hatch as producer.

The first disc, "The Tony Hatch Orchestra and Sound," is neither better nor worse than any of those better-known instrumental records conducted and arranged by George Martin, though "TV Themes" has its inventive moments.
The best part of this set is "The Songs of Tony Hatch", which has to work hard to avoid being a Petula Clark best-of and does succeed at that, with good sides by Mark Wynter, the Montanas, et al.

Like Burt Bacharach had Dionne Warwick, Tony Hatch had Petula Clark: the singer who made Hatch's songs so thoroughly her own that covers -- and there have been dozens -- are simply superfluous.
In this collection, Hatch's ultra-sophisticated melodies and production sound as lustrous as ever, but other elements register as well.
The humor of "Don't Sleep in the Subway" is dry and subtle, but the deeply bizarre "Las Vegas," which describes tourists losing everything they own among the town's attractions, sounds like Randy Newman at his most perverse.

While on National Service, he had been permitted to leave his London barracks most afternoons to continue as a freelance musical director with Top Rank and then Pye—for which he had supervised two domestic smashes in 1961 for the Brook Brothers, while gaining lesser accolades with the Kestrels.
