Sonata Arctica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1997 the band's name was changed to Tricky Means, and from that point until 1999 their style was thoroughly worked upon and ultimately was drastically changed, acquiring strong emphasis on the keyboard melodies and relying on an easily distinguishable rhythm line maintained both by the bass and the guitar.
Vocalist Tony Kakko developed a clean singing style which relies both on falsetto and tenor voices.
Tony Kakko then decided to focus on singing and began looking for a new keyboard player for Sonata Arctica; Mikko Härkin (ex-Kenziner) was eventually invited to fill the position.

Tony: Well when Mikko left the band he would have liked to play on the album but not tour, so I said “No you can’t” You have to tour when you play on an album because you’re getting royalties and all that shit and if you’re not touring it is really wrong.
Tony: The US… Well, I’m not that familiar with it because mainly I hear that it is a lot of this nu-metal thing, mixing with rapping but you do have Symphony X and Dream Theater, both good bands coming from there but I consider them more progressive.
Tony: Yea in our guest book and a lot of emails on our website there’s a lot of requests to come play the US but again we need to sell enough albums there to be able to headline.

Tony: It was in San Sebastian with Stratovarius and Gamma Ray.
Tony: That was done tongue in cheek and "if you live..." has been mostly criticized, because the lyrics aren't heavy metal.

Tony Kakko and company have an impeccable sense of melody, and although the songs often require repeated listens to fully appreciate, they are all extremely catchy.
Tony Kakko even sounds like Hansi in some places, and there's a nice juxtaposition of gruff, harsh screaming with mellow intonations.
Kakko is a master of melody shifts, the song will be somwhere at one second and the next it will be doing something completely different while STILL holding coherance, Dream Theater (the proclaimed masters) can only boast this sometimes, but it's like they have something to prove rather than focusing on the song itself.

I was lucky to interview singer Tony Kakko after that performance, who said they would be returning to North American within the next year, a promise which they did not fail to keep.
A funny thing happened for me on this tour—I’ve cited Kakko on many occasions as one of my favourite singers, but for some reason it never quite struck me how many voices he has before the break in the set for the ‘sing-along’ bit.
Both at the Montreal and Toronto show, Kakko presented us with a plethora of voices, going from a more ‘classical’-sounding tenor voice to rasps, to high-pitched weird sounds… Although it was a stunt all in good fun, I have to say this moment truly impressed me.

Lead vocalist Tony Kakko, who writes all the music, seems to understand every instrument intimately and as the band's oroginal keyboardist, the keyboards are no exception.
I don't like it as much as the first, mostly because the keyboard solos aren't quite as ridiculous (Mikko Harkin has become the lead keyboardist so Tony Kakko can focus on singing, but Kakko is still credited as "additional keyboards," whatever that means), but they're still better than almost any other band out there.
The piano and Kakko's voice are one hell of a combination.
