Tony Kornheiser's promising Monday Night Football debut. - By Robert Weintraub - Slate Magazine
Kornheiser, who's teaming up with Mike Tirico and Joe Theismann for the glamour telecast, has spent the last few weeks setting the bar as low as possible by playing the schlemiel role to the hilt.
But Kornheiser also maintains a distrust of corporate authority and is unafraid to bite the hand that feeds, as proved by his Lettermanesque baiting of his ESPN Radio bosses until the partnership ended nonamicably in 2004.
Kornheiser is meant to be the New Cosell, but play-by-play man Tirico did a fair impersonation himself last night.

Jason Alexander plays Tony (Tony Kleinman on the show) and the only other well-known actor is Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who portrays Michael Wilbon (he's called Bernie Widmer).
Tony blusters and fumbles at home, embarrassing his teenage son and daughter, while his wife looks on with an equal measure of bemusement and mild irritation.
Pardon the Interruption is structured so that most of the time Kornheiser and Wilbon are arguing a la Crossfire, but the co-hosts are smart enough to know when to play their discussions about sports seriously, and when to joke around or when to play devil's advocate.

Tony Kornheiser, who ostensibly writes for the Washington Post, had to quit his side job as the host of a daily radio show so he'd have time for his other side job as the host of a daily TV show, ESPN's Pardon the Interruption.
