LaRussa is a purist, a traditionalist -- a baseball man. He loves the game -- eats, sleeps, and breathes it -- and, like any lover, is devoted to it, tosses and turns over it, constantly thinks about it.
First, how great Tony LaRussa is and secondly how complex managing a baseball game is. The author succeds on the first point as he fawns completly over his subject.
For some reason, Buzz Bissinger feels that his insider scoop descriptions of Tony LaRussa need to be coupled with this weird defense of the "old-school" and a puerile attack on Michael Lewis' Moneyball and sabermetrician statheads in general-- as if the statheads didn't love the game or something.

Tony LaRussa and the Search for Significance -- The Hardball Times
Obviously, LaRussa has other information at his disposal with which to make his decisions, including an understanding of Carpenter’s repertoire and the voluminous charts that pitching coach Dave Duncan keeps, as mentioned by Bissinger and detailed by George Will in Men At Work: The Craft of Baseball.
Also strategy (the reason LaRussa has his cards after all) dictates that extreme matchups be avoided both by the offense and defense through the use of relief specialists and pinch hitters.
Even at the.08 threshold that still means that on average less than one out of 17 of the matchups (given three years of data) written on LaRussa’s index cards each game are relevant in the sense that they may reveal information that the calculated expected average doesn't (at least in terms of batting average).
