Levin's distinctive bass and Chapman Stick work has lent a unique sonic texture to the recordings of Peter Gabriel, King Crimson and Paul Simon.
The diversity of such highbrow clientele demands that Levin be a consummate session player, laying down a thumping rock groove on one recording and an understated melody on the next.
Levin is also the author of Beyond The Bass Clef, an unorthodox bass primer, and a graphic artist.

On the 2002 PIECES OF THE SUN tour, the Tony Levin Band (with Larry Fast, Jerry Marotta and Jesse Gress) has tried to capture all the magic of it's live shows on this 2 CD issue.
And like the aforementioned players, Levin is anything but an oldies machine; he uses each new recording as a way of further juxtaposing his primary instruments (bass and Chapman stick) against the weirdest, most challenging stuff he can score.
Consequently, Pieces of the Sun is, predictably, wholly unpredictable, with Levin and his 2001 touring band lighting into a set of headphone-melting instrumentals best described as pulsing prog-rock built on the kind of awesome playing that, in a concert setting, attracts packs of drooling amateurs to the stage to watch the musician's hands.

Sales of tickets and CD’s have been very good, and Tony fills his days on the road with acting both as publicity and salesman for the group, spending hours of each day either on the phone or in meetings, setting up rooms, practice spaces, meals, hotels, all in all tasks usually reserved for Tour Manager.
