  The Tony Martin Story
Martin, who was in the house at the time, opened fire with an illegally-held pump-action shotgun.
Martin had been burgled so many times that he had set up an elaborate network of look-out ladders and traps, even removing a stair to hinder intruders.
The court found in Martin's favour and in October 2001 his offence was downgraded to manslaughter and his sentence reduced to five years.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | The killer who won a nation's sympathy
Martin's story is that he was in his bedroom when he was woken by the sound of the raiders breaking in.
Martin's defence took the "tactical" decision of going along with the theory that all the shots had been fired while downstairs, as its alternative was to have to explain why Martin had fired once from the stairs then pursued the raiders downstairs.
It is thought, however, that Martin, an intensely private man from an old farming family, did not wish his defence to focus on his mental state and history.
