Tony was now growing in confidence and wrote all of the songs for the third album 'Thank Christ for the Bomb', which entered the charts after John Peel played one of the tracks 'Soldier' on his Sunday afternoon Radio show and it sold 30,000 copies.

Tony McPhee : Two Sides of Tony (T.S.) McPhee - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: )
McPhee's writing is penetrating and resonant, unleashing his thoughts on the transcendence of life ("Three Times Seven"), the bitterness of failing relationships ("All My Money Alimony"), the pain of loss ("Morning Eyes"), and pure anger ("Don't Dog Me Bitch"), with each song accompanied by the guitar and nothing else.
McPhee bellows and rants in a penetrating manner about the unethical nature of war and humankind's inhumanity throughout the ages, switching ever so smoothly to his abstract philosophies about the corruption of power and the mystery of fate, life, and death.
Although this album has been eclipsed by what McPhee has accomplished with his band, its revelations about McPhee as a musician and a philosopher are quite gripping, and this is a must-hear for all Groundhog fans.

Tony is now touring a solo acoustic set featuring material from the new album, blues classics inspired by the likes of Memphis Minnie, Maria Muldaur, Hooker, Wolf and others and solo versions of Groundhogs favourites.

Despite two strokes and a voice that frankly never was his strong point, Tony cleverly overcame the missing years by continuing his enduring affair with the most idiosyncratic blues progressions ever to be heard on a guitar.
Tony’s muscular approach and suitably caustic growl at least seemed to wake the crowd a little.
For the rest it was more a case of the crowd paying homage to another 70’s rock blueser who seems unsure as to his current musical context, save for going back to his earliest roots.

There are songs about being down on your luck, or being shunned by your woman; typical blues themes, yet sung and played with the very untypical skill that comes from McPhee`s many years of devotion to the art of blues playing.
The title track is Tony McPhee`s swipe at the `purists` who maintain that only fl artistes can play the blues properly.
Yet ironically, this entire album is, in itself, evidence that this purist stance is wholly unfounded, for McPhee reveals himself here to be a superbly skilled and knowledgeable white blues guitarist/singer/songwriter.
