Tony Miles, Britain's first chess grandmaster, who has died aged 46, inspired a generation of English talent to defeat Russian opponents and challenge the Soviet Union for world supremacy.
Miles learned chess at the age of five, was educated at King Edward's school, Birmingham, won the 1968 British under-14 title and then improved rapidly.
Miles was ranked for a decade among the top 10 grandmasters, but despite his successes, he never reached the candidates round of the world championship.

Miles spearheaded a new generation of young English players whose rise led eventually to Nigel Short's march to the World Championship final in 1993 and England's status in the 1980s as the second chess nation behind the Russians.
Tony's stay in the USA was brief and later he went to Australia but eventually he returned to Birmingham and for the last ten years he was one of the most active players on the UK and world circuit.
Miles inspired us because he showed that the Soviets were not invincible, he was never afraid, rarely took draws and often played more moves than anyone else in a tournament and scored many a win due to his sheer determination.

Miles' achievement seemed to aid others in British chess as in the next five years Keene, Stean, Nunn, Mestel and Speelman were to follow him to the GM title.
Miles made accusations to the British Chess Federation about Raymond Keene over payments made by the BCF to Keene for acting as Miles's second at the Turin Internzonal in 1985 (Miles said that Keene had not assisted him).
Miles played in the Mondariz Zonal tournament and although he got into a playoff for a qualification place the odds were not with him.

We have heard the very sad news that Grandmaster Anthony Miles, the first British GM in history and long one of the world's leading players, has died at the age of 46.
Miles suffered from diabetes, and was found dead in his bed in his native Birmingham, England yesterday morning.
Miles was a frequent competitor in American tournaments, tying for first in the 1979, 1980, and 1989 World Opens.

Miles learnt of his diabetic condition late in life (two or three years ago I believe) and many are speculating that this was a major contributory factor in his untimely death.
Tony was not really a close friend (I'm almost a decade younger than him and had not even played in my first novice tournament when he had already gained the Grandmaster title) but I liked him and always enjoyed his company, his never failing sense of humour and his perceptive, cutting insights.
In chess terms Tony Miles achieved a great deal: first amongst Brits in the race to the Grandmaster title, many fine tournament successes, the leading English player of the seventies and early eighties, top board for England at various Olympiads when we were second only to the Soviet Union.

Everyone was saddened to hear of the death of GM Tony Miles on 12th November 2001.
Many people have spoken of how combative Miles was when playing chess and this is reflected in the way he approached played in Brynmawr Chess Club's first GM simultaneous event on 30th May 1995.
Tony emerged from the event having conceded only two draws to spoil his otherwise perfect performance.
