Walton went on to earn Oscar nominations for his elegant costumes for the director's MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (1974) and for both sets and costumes for Lumet's misguided THE WIZ (1978).
Walton finally shared a statuette (with Philip Rosenberg) for Bob Fosse's superb ALL THAT JAZZ (1979), which required the creation of not only contemporary Manhattan settings but also elaborate fantasy and flashback sequences, most notably a hospital setting.

 Major Barbara, a CurtainUp review
As a director, Tony Walton is no doubt having fun, and it shows.
Still, his direction shows many of the signs of the novice that he is as a director: actors pacing around on stage, cumbersome blocking (on Irish Rep's admittedly small stage) and unnecessary little flourishes.
Walton's costume designs are just fine, including both the well-dressed Undershaft family and the far less elegant garb of the denizens of the Salvation Army shelter.

After the Ball - New York Magazine Theater Review
Script editor Barry Day, a former adman and longtime Coward enthusiast, has added “extra material”—turning, for example, the Duchess of Berwick into a couplet-spewing narrator who winks obscenely at the audience like something out of this season’s Belle Epoque.
After the Ball was probably never a truly great show, but Day and director Tony Walton have beaten it to a bland pulp.
In his director’s note, Walton says that when he saw the original production of After the Ball on the West End in 1954, he wished he could “see past their posturings and relate to Wilde’s characters.” Such a wish betrays a fundamental misapprehension.
