'Awkward Squad' Gains Another Member :: The Socialist 7 June 2003
TONY WOODLEY'S victory as general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) is a big defeat for Tony Blair and the Blairites in the trade unions.
Woodley's victory, coupled with his public statements, will raise expectations amongst workers everywhere and not just amongst TGWU members, that some union leaders are prepared not just to talk radical but to put their promises into action.
TONY WOODLEY'S decisive victory over the other three candidates was a real kick in the teeth for the national full-time officials.

New Statesman - NS Profile - Tony Woodley
Woodley's principal opponent, Jack Dromey, has known for months that if he could not get rid of the Blairite tag that was rather unfairly attached to him, the election was lost.
Woodley's election tells us, more than any other recent event, about the state of the trade unions and the Labour Party, and especially about the TGWU - which right up to 1979, when Jack Jones retired, was the labour movement's heavy artillery, and which has been in slow decline ever since.
It was Woodley who put together the life-saving package, and made the vital telephone call that persuaded the former Rover chief executive John Towers to lead the Phoenix rescue consortium, giving it the credibility it needed.

In a bad week for Tony Blair the Transport and General Workers Union delivered more bad news by electing self-confessed “fully paid-up member of the awkward squadTony Woodley as its general secretary.
Tony Woodley, the favourite in the TGWU election, had been making statements that were worrying from New Labour’s point of view.
Although Woodley achieved a clear victory and the overall ‘left’ vote was about double Dromey’s, it is worth noting that Dromey picked up support from a substantial number of branches and apparently did well in the Midlands.
