The monuments are concentrated in the Orhun, Tola, Ongin and Selenge river basins.
The Tonyukuk Inscription lies further eastwards, at Bayn Tsokto between the city of Nalaih and the River Tola, about 50 kilometres southwest of the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar).
The narrator of this inscription is Bilge Tonyukuk.

After the death of Tonyukuk, an inscription has been built to his memory in the region of Bayin-çokto in Orkhun (perhaps in 726-727).
This is not only a source of national history remained from the Turks, but at the same time, since it is the first monument of the Turkish language and literature that can be read easily and long enough, it has an important place in the cultural history.
The possibility of writing out of the text of this inscription by Tonyukuk himself, has gained the honour to Ayguçi, Bilge Tonyukuk to be the first person known, his name and his personality, in the Turkish literature.

The monument of Tonyukuk is located in the Tuul River basin near the small town of Nalaikh.
It was made in 744 and is devoted to the wise minister Tonyukuk of the Orkhon Turkic State that was prospering in the 4-7th centuries A.D. The ancient Turkic State had been fighting with others and aiding the Tang rulers of China.
In wars and peace great was the deed of General Tonyukuk who devoted all his life to the wellbeing of his state.

Although the Gokturks were forced to become subjects of China in the 7th Century, they regained their independence in 632, led by a hero named Kutluk.
The famed Orhun Epitaphs from this period are made up of the tombstone inscriptions of Tonyukuk (d.720), Kultegin (d.731) and Bilge Kagan (d.734).
The rule of the Gokturks was brought to an end in the year 745 by the Uygur, who were of the same ethnic stock as themselves.

These three inscriptions are named after Bilge Khan, his brother commander-in-chief Kültigin and the great statesman Tonyukuk, the legendary trio of the GökTurks.
These inscriptions, estimated to have been written between the years 720 and 735, tell about the GökTurk's historical, social and political structures in Bilge Khan and Tonyukuk's own words.
One side of these monuments have writing in Chinese and the other sides were written in Turkish using the GökTurk alphabet with 38 letters.
