Tool (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tool was quick to release their first full-length album, Undertow (1993), soon after Opiate, because many of the songs on Undertow had already been written at the time Opiate came out.
Tool are inarguably a part of the rock genre, but just where they fall in that genre and how much influence past groups have exerted on Tool is the subject of debate among both fans and casual listeners.
Tool are sometimes given an extended genre that would appear to be specific to the band, such as "psychedelic math metal" (see MTV News: The Pain of Perfection) - as other bands that have defied a common classification have.

The term machine tool is usually reserved for tools that used a power source other than human movement, but they can be powered by people if appropriately set up.
Many historians of technology consider that the true machine tools were born when direct human involvement was removed from the shaping or stamping process of the different kinds of tools.
For instance, they consider that lathe machine tools were invented around 1751 by Jacques de Vaucanson because he was the first to mount the cutting instrument on a mechanically adjustable head, taking it out of the hands of the operator.

Tool is a band whose music is pretty hard to label.
On _nima_, Tool creates a 77-minute gargantuan slice of thought-provoking art-metal, which mainly encourages people to look deeper and think for themselves - whether it be looking beyond the surface of cliched beliefs (examples: what people are taught to believe in church, or what's seen and absorbed from television and more).

Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock.
Tool didn't -- they embraced the artsy, faux-bohemian preoccupations of Jane's Addiction while they simultaneously paid musical homage to the dark, relentlessly bleak visions of grindcore, death metal, and thrash.
Tool, however, had a knack for conveying the strangled, oppressive angst that the alternative nation of the early '90s claimed as their own.

The problem is, Tool defines "opus" as taking their "defining element" (wanking sludge) and stretching it out to the maximum digital capacity of a compact disc.
Dictionary of the Underworld also offers several definitions for "tool," including: "a small boy used to creep through windows," "to steal from women's pockets," and "to loaf, to idle, to do nothing in particular." All of which oddly strike the nail on the head in relation to Lateralus.
Tool are the best metal band, since they can get trippy (almost pretty, but in a dark way) then just really loud.

Everything about Tool's fourth album is an experience, starting with the packaging, which consists of liner credits printed on a translucent plastic sleeve over the CD and a booklet that layers anatomical representations atop one another--the first page pictures musculature and blood vessels; the next, bones; the third, internal organs; and so on.
