Toonumbar National Park, (5750 ha), is located on the Richmond Range in far north eastern New South Wales.
These forest contain significant areas of subtropical and temperate rainforest and are listed with other nearby National Parks such as the Border Ranges and Lamington National Parks as part of the World Heritage Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve of Australia.
Toonumbar dam is surrounded by forest with many species of birdlife.

Toonumbar National Park's World Heritage rainforests grow on the rich basaltic soils formed from the eruptions of Mount Warning and Focal Peak.
In 1982, what is now the Toonumbar National Park's Murray Scrub World Heritage rainforest, came close to being destroyed when Forestry proposed to log 90% of the canopy to supply concrete form board.

Sharing its western boundary with the Border Ranges National Park this park forms part of the caldera rim of the eroded Mount Warning volcano.
The park is largely undeveloped, although opportunities exist for bushwalking and car touring with picnic and camping facilities at Iron Pot Creek.

The Minister for the Environment, Pam Allan, today hailed the Carr Labor Government’s declaration of 85 new national parks and reserves in the north east of the State as a dramatic and breathtaking step for conservation and for the greening of the next century.
Ms Allan said the new parks and additions would provide a broad range of new opportunities for nature-based tourism in the region.
