United Kingdom general election, 1918: Information from Answers.com
The United Kingdom general election of 1918 was the first to be held after the Representation of the People Act 1918, which meant it was the first UK general election in which women could vote.
This is because it saw the overwhelming defeat of the moderate nationalist Irish Parliamentary Party, which had dominated the Irish political landscape since the 1880s, and a landslide victory for the radical Sinn Féin party, which had never previously enjoyed significant electoral success.
The aftermath of the elections saw the convention of an extra-legal parliament, the First Dáil, by the elected Sinn Féin candidates, and the outbreak of the Irish War of Independence.

I guess you could ask why have 641 parliamentary constituencies; why not just elect the whole lot in one constituency (the only way to make sure national votes are reflected exactly in the house of commons).
Poor councillors would be easily identifiable: at the moment if one councillor's a duff, then the other two have to carry them which is not fair on them; but on the other hand, whoever ends up with a lazy councillor will be saddled with them til the next election.

 Shuggy's Blog: Disenfranchised pro-war voter
Either I'm getting old, or my newly-drawn constituency of Glasgow North West is considered a safe Labour seat because all the other candidates seem to have an average age of about 14, if the campaign literature is anything to go by.
Looking at the stats - and my prospective MP's voting record, two points occur to me. One is that while elsewhere in the country, this election is between Labour and Conservative - in this constituency it certainly isn't, what with it being 233 on the Tories' hitlist.
One other thing I noticed was that the Tory candidate, on his flyer, vows to "keep Accident and Emergency at Gartnavel Hospital".

The Muslim Association of Britain welcomes the Parliament vote on the Anti-Terrorism Bill's 90-day internment, which saw the defeat of the government's proposal.
The Muslim Association of Britain remains steadfast in that even the 28-day internment proposal which ultimately won the vote, is unjustified, and MAB will continue to campaign with its sister organizations and friends against the entire anti-terror bill which the government proposed in the aftermath of the 7/7 attacks in London.
Being the only Muslim MP to reflect the stand of not only British Muslims, but also the majority of the British people who saw this proposed bill as a contravention of basic human rights and freedoms and an erosion of our civil liberties, Sadiq Khan must receive our praise, admiration and support.

European, Local, London Elections - The Other Side forums - suitable for mature readers!
When you vote, you'll be voting for three things: who you want as Mayor of London, who you want to represent you in the European Parliament, and who you want running your local council.
Currently, the Mayor of London is Ken Livingstone (Labour), the European Parliament is dominated by the Christian Democracts (Conservatives), and local councils are split fairly evenly between Conservatives and Labour, with a strong Liberal Democrat showing.
For European and General Elections I vote for New Labour - this is more a vote for my constituency representatives (both of whom I know and dislike less than the alternatives).
