For those who’ve never suffered economic trials enough to seek Top Ramen’s salty recourse (or who live in a land where juicy beetles, surplus shoe-leather, and other, tastier, bargain-food options exist), it’s a dry brick of Asian-style noodles, sold with a “flavor” packet of bouillon-dust.
Of negligible nutritive value, “Top Ramen” is the gastronomic equivalent of the “dead man’s float”-- extending one’s ability to endure until all hope of rescue has been abandoned.
Given the pleasurable nature of my Top Ramen reunion, though, and with the benefit of my subsequent research into its versatile gourmet applications, I anticipate weathering this dollar-drought in fine style.

I just made myself a cup of instant ramen and something occurred to me: there are so many different companies that provide a few billion people with ramen via the market, but it all seems to be the same.
The ubiquitous ramen we all lived on in college (also sometimes called gakusei ryori or "student cuisine" in Japan) was invented in 1958 by Nissin Foods founder Momofuku Ando.
Momofuku's ramen arrived on the east coast of the U.S. in 1972 as "Oodles of Noodles." The next year came "Nissin Cup Noodles" in the convenient styrofoam cup, and soon hundreds of knock-offs.

If your only exposure to ramen is of the “top” variety, you don’t know what you’re missing.
Ramen comes with all different types of ingredients with my favorite being katsu curry ramenramen noodles with a thick curry broth and fried chicken.
This may be difficult to find and you’ll more commonly find ramen with a clear broth served with slices of pork.

That goota ramen is pretty wild looking...I can't imagine that I'd be a very healthy meal though since most ramen is generally fairly salty.
Just ask Ramen to to the citizens from the two top ramen consuming countries and you will get a funny look in their faces.
There are many websites online to get good ramen, but none also provide decent information about the products except this particular site (www.noodleson.com) which have articles on the art of instant noodle, including topics on buying, eating, preparing, healthwise, etc., and extensive product reviews.
