Top-down and bottom-up design - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modern software design approaches usually combine both top-down and bottom-up approaches.
The top-down model is often designed with the assistance of "dark boxes" that make it easier to bring to fulfillment but insufficient and irrelevant in understanding the elementary mechanisms.
Top-down design was promoted in the 1970s by IBM researcher Harlan Mills and Niklaus Wirth.

 VisualWorks: top-down and bottom-up design
The advantage of bottom up design is the economies that result when general solutions can be reused.
A disadvantage of bottom-up design is that its focus is not on specific requirements.
In bottom-up design, the emphasis is on applying general solutions to a wide range of problems.

"Top down" and "Bottom up" design
Top down design is usually possible only when you start by having a very clear idea of the problem and how to solve it.
A design methodology that starts by defining the "low level" procedures then moves up towards more and more complex procedures using those already defined is called "bottom up design".
Whether you do your programming top down or bottom up, it is absolutely essential to be clear about the "ontology" of your problem.

 CPS 450 top-down and bottom-up parsing
Unlike top-down and bottom-up design (where top-down is considered generally superior) top-down and bottom-up parsing each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Top-down parsing is goal directed: "Here is a good parse, let's see if we have the data." Bottom-up parsing is data directed: "This is what we have, let's see if it's a good parse."
In bottom-up parsing, we build the parse tree a piece at a time, looking at the tokens and trying to find the simplest, lowest-level units they can be part of.

PhD. Dissertation of Miguel A. Alonso Pardo
Strongly-driven 2-stack automata can be used to describe bottom-up, top-down or mixed parsing strategies for tree adjoining languages with respect to the recognition of the adjunctions.
In the first part of this dissertation, we introduce the problem of parsing tree adjoining grammars and linear indexed grammars, creating, for both formalisms, a continuum from simple pure bottom-up algorithms to complex predictive algorithms and showing what transformations must be applied to each one in order to obtain the next one in the continuum.
We describe several tabular algorithms for Tree Adjoining Grammar parsing, creating a continuum from simple pure bottom-up algorithms to complex predictive algorithms and showing what transformations must be applied to each one in order to obtain the next one in the continuum.

 Programming Bottom-Up
As well as top-down design, they follow a principle which could be called bottom-up design-- changing the language to suit the problem.
In typical code, once you abstract out the parts which are merely bookkeeping, what's left is much shorter; the higher you build up the language, the less distance you will have to travel from the top down to it.
And when language and program fit one another well, you end up with code which is clear, small, and efficient.

Typically, meeting the triple bottom line is seen as a balancing act, a series of compromises between competing interests played out in product and process design.
When products and services such as these are the norm, when design for the triple top line is applied at every level of industry, productivity and profits will no longer be at odds with the concerns of the commons.
Triple top line thinkers, rather than trying to balance these values, discover opportunities in honoring the needs of all three.

 Compiler design (Henry Spencer)
This is actually somewhat amusing, because the first C compiler in fact used a top-down parser, and one of the early implementors of a bottom-up C parser (Steve Johnson) complained in print that the language was designed for top-down and was awkward to parse bottom-up!
For example, top-down with the usual one token of lookahead has difficulty with some aspects of C expression syntax, where "(" may introduce a parenthesized subexpression [a + (b * c)] or a unary conversion [a + (unsigned) b], and a top-down parser has to decide which way to go before seeing what follows.
I've also implemented several systems in which the scanner is followed by an error-repair layer which interfaces the scanner to the (top-down) parser, hiding syntax errors from the parser.

MSW Management Landfill Design: The Matrix Approach
The landfill design sequence has two potential work paths once the facility layout has been determined: one associated with the “top” of the landfill (phasing, final grades, cap and cover, surface water, erosion, and landfill gas), the other with the “bottom” of the landfill (foundation, liner, leachate collection, leachate extraction, and leachate disposal).
Additional hydrogeological information will then be used to design the first task of the “bottom of the landfill” work path, layout of a groundwater management system (if necessary).
The matrix approach is facilitated by the fact that the design of each landfill system and the overall design effort follow a consistent sequence.
