It is located adjacent to the unincorporated community of Topanga, California, within the city of Los Angeles, California.
The word Topanga itself comes from Shoshonean people, who lived in the area for thousands of years until the establishment of San Fernando Mission by the Spanish.

Topanga is 12,748 acres (52 km²) in size, and is bounded on three sides by State Park or conservancy lands, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean and a small strip of Malibu, which is the main community to the west.
Topanga Canyon Boulevard, California State Route 27, is the principal thoroughfare, connecting the Ventura Freeway with Pacific Coast Highway.
Topanga is the name given to the area by the Tongva tribe, and may mean "a place above." It was the western border of their territory, abutting the Chumash tribe that occupied the coast from Malibu northwards.

The trail along the creek under the cover of the oaks and sycamores is beautiful at any time of the year but watch for the difficult to avoid poison oak.
If you are in the mood for a picnic and beautiful flowers, drive into the picnic area at Tapia Park.
We parked near the Salvation Army gate and started hiking the one mile trail.
