The Topkapi Dagger, a beautiful dagger ornamented with valuable emerald pieces was planned to be sent to Nadir Shah of Iran as a present, but when it was on the way it was heard that Nadir had been assassinated and so it was taken back to the palace treasury.

At the end of the 19th century Archeology Museum and School of Fine Arts (now Oriental Works Museum) were built in the large garden which is to the northwest of the First Court.
Topkapi Palace was converted to a museum in 1924.

Topkapi Palace, the imperial residence of the Ottoman Sultans for four centuries, lies at the tip of the headland at the mouth of the Bosphorus Strait.
It is possible that the first builders of Topkapi Palace made use of existing foundations and retaining walls, hence the non-axial plan of the palace.Undoubtedly Topkapi involved a synthesis of Byzantine elements but what grew up on the peninsula by the Golden Horn cannot possibly be divorced from its predecessors in Ottoman history.
Subsequently it became a military museum and is now a venue for classical concerts.A narrow lane leading down the hill from the church takes you to Gülhane Park which was once part of the palace gardens.

This complex, known as Topkapi, overlooking both the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus was built soon after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 and for over four centuries was the administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire.
After the restoration of various buildings within the complex of palaces, the richness of style used in the construction of the buildings and the precious works of art displayed there turned it into one of the leading museums of the world, and the palace was opened to the public.
Among the six thousand works of art displayed in the museum there are crests, swords, shields, quivers belonging to Sultans, jade bowls, writing sets, sceptres, canes, jewelled daggers, oil lamps and hookahs or hubble-bubbles.

Due to the film, “TOPKAPI”, this dagger has become world famous, a gift to the Persian King Nadir Shah, However, with the killing of the Shah in an uprising, the dagger was returned to the treasury in Istanbul.
