Topolobampo is a beautiful-ugly port town, or an ugly-beautiful town.
As I approached Topolobampo from a distance, it looked like a dark nebulous with three bright stars demanding attention: the church, flood lit on a hill, the Hotel Marina's marquee and the brightest of all, the lights of Circo Vargas.
Topolobampo has all the possibilities of a Mediterranean hillside beauty, which cruise passengers love to photograph in sparking sunlight.

Topolobampo uses the same waiting area as Frontera Grill, the more casual sister restaurant, and share the same bathrooms located in the bar- both which takes away from the special atmosphere one might expect for the price tag of the meal.
Peppers are big at Topolobampo, but I was unable to discern the subtlties of the different ones by the fourth course.
The host was friendly, someone brought us delicious fresh guacamole served with crispy cucumber and jicama slices instead of tired old chips, and the calm, helpful waitress, bless her heart, brought us a shaker full of the margaritas which Playboy magazine rightly named the best in the country.

I just ate at Topolobampo and perhaps my expactations were quite high, but I found what should be vibrant, flavorful food to be bland and frankly, not that enjoyable.
I have been to Topolobampo four or five times over the last twelve years or so and I have been disappointed every time.
I have never felt that Topolobampo was terrible, and certainly I have eaten some interesting dishes there, I just have never had a start to finish great experience there.

Frontera Grill and Topolobampo are now more of a Chicago institution than a neigborhood restaurant.
While you may not be willing or able to stroll into Topolobampo for an impromptu bite, there were many times I'd head to the bar at Frontera for a margarita, some sopes, and an entree and call it a night.
Though that was years before Topolobampo came to be, we have since celebrated any number of special occasions at Topo including 4-5 years running of their Like Water for Chocolate Valentines dinner, since discontinued.

Several times it's been to Topolobampo 1) because they love it 2) because it's excellent, and 3) because it's reasonable.
Blackbird was no more expensive than Topolobampo and was truly a wonderful meal.
I ate at both restaurants on Friday (Topolobampo for lunch and Blackbird for dinner).

The reason ships visit Topolobampo is proximity to Los Mochris, the west end of the train to Copper Canyon.
Although the idea of Copper Canyon was intriguing, spending sixteen hours of bus and train travel to stay for two hours just didn't fly with us.
Life is good with my husband Tom, dogs Cody and Mandy, and a considerable yarn and fabric stash.
