Tor Books is an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC which publishes popular fiction, and is particularly noted for its science fiction and fantasy titles.
In March 2006, Tor began releasing DRM-free ebooks through Webscriptions, but Holtzbrinck pulled the project within days of it starting, over Tor's objections.

If a legacy, not one to be envied, and based upon the obvious ambition of the original books, one must assume that the author had desired something more than being remembered only as having written the longest story in genre history.
Even now, after ten books, it is difficult to imagine how he can successfully conclude this series under another three, without sacrificing the realism and verity of the narrative world he's created.
In his bio at the back of each book he likes to state that "he has been writing since 1977 and intends to continue until they nail shut his coffin." For his fans' sake, let us hope this takes place after he finishes the series.

Many of the books have been out of print for a number of years, and are very hard to come by.

The first few chapters of this book are some of the wittiest that I have read in a while.
The opening of the book, in which we learn of Ned Malone's motivation, certainly comes across as dated and sexist.
This book was tied for 9th on August Derleth's Arkham Survey of 'Basic SF Titles', but it really is more of an Adventure novel than a Science Fiction novel.

This is most definately a book you have to wade through but Scott is such a masterful story teller that the difficult passages are worth the effort.
THe introduction to my copy says that the book is not accurate to medieval history and was not meant to be.
Although Scott's book pays fitting homage to tradition, justice, virtue, and piety, there is an undercurrent of criticism of the Church and men tasked with defending the common good.
