Torban - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The torban or teorban is an Eastern European musical instrument that combined features of the Baroque lute with those of the psaltery.
It differed from the torban by the absence of the bass strings, and was closely related to central European Mandora and Pandora (see Lute).
The early kobza-bandura (lute-family) is not to be confused with the unfretted, metal-strung starosvitska bandura (known after 1800) and its descendant the concert bandura, instruments from the family of harps, psalteries and zithers.

 Torban and Classical Bandura
The Torban is a variant of the bandura and is often called the gentlemen's or pans'ka bandura.
The torban has approximately 30 strings, usually made of gut, although instruments having up to 60 strings are known to have existed.
It is thought that the Torban was influenced by the French theorbo (teorbe) which the Cossacks under the command of Colonel Ivan Sirko would have observed during their campaigns with the French during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648).

Music of Ukraine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ukrainian folk music, long known for its unique melancholy, became internationally popular in the 18th century, and many Ukrainian musicians went to serve royal courts of Poland and Russia (see Bilohradsky(Belogradsky), Lyubystok, Nyzhevych, Berezovsky, Bortnyansky).
The most distinctive musical instrument unique to Ukraine is now the bandura, a 19th century invention used in folk and semi-classical music, and bandura's predecessors: torban, and kobza, both previously facing extinction, but now being revived.

Some argue that in order to differentiate the kobza with the prystrunky from the kobza without prystrunky a new term was introduced in Ukraine.
This is not entirely convincing, as the classic 19th century Russian Dictionary by V.Dahl unequivocally states that the term "bandura" was applied not only to Kobza but to Torban as well.

Torban's Pacific Island   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Torban found that, for his own sanity, he needed to get away from the research at regular intervals, and had devised his own personal approach for doing that.
He purchased a beautiful island in the South Pacific called Olu, and built a hidden research laboratory in a huge bunker under the jungle in the center of the island.
He brought in great chefs who provided a continual flow of wonderful food for the resort’s guests (and for his research staff), and the resort provided a perfect place for his staff to occasionally disappear among the guests, relax and clear their minds.

The torban differed from the bandura in that its body was glued from sections or ribs like that of the lute or mandolin, whereas the bandura, like its predecessor, the kobza, is carved from a solid piece of wood.
The torban is thought to have been directly influenced by the French theorbo which the Kozaks under the command of Colonel Ivan Sirko would have come across during their part in the campaigns on the side of the French during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648).
Not only is the construction of the torban very similar to that of the theorbo in that the body of both instruments was glued from ribs and both had double pegboxes, but the similarity in name also points to this relationship.

Torban leaf is routinely sold for its medicinal properties, and may also be foraged wild.
Growing in mild climates, the tree is not difficult to find, but care must be exercised in selecting the leaves in the proper stage of growth, or they will be useless, save for tea-making.
When consumed, the leaves of the Torban tree can treat minor nervous system defects, such as slurred speech.

 TORBAN
Whoever did this apparently had no idea what double-strining is, and his alterations rendered the instrument useless as a bandura, because of the string-holes paired closely.
It is strung entirely in gut (some overspun with silver (tarnished fl)), and the same strings were on it at least since the Met acquired the torban in 1890.
This torban differs in some details from the Posnan museum one: Met torban has 3 single strings on the neck (+4 doubles), while Posnan has 5 singles (+5 doubles).

Filmtracks: Ghosts of the Abyss (Joel McNeely)
Together, the lack of a cohesive theme or instrumental use causes McNeely's effort to be adequate, but mundane.
Most viewers of Ghosts of the Abyss will remember and request the vocal adaptation of the theme for "Darkness, Darkness" (performed by Lisa Torban), and this heartfelt song appears at the end of the album (along with the "Departure" song by Glen Phillips).
There is a generous amount of McNeely's score on the album release for Ghosts of the Abyss, but unfortunately it doesn't meet the high standards IMAX beauty and scope typically demand.

TORBAN > THE LUTE IN UKRAINE
This page is devoted to the TORBAN, an unusual instrument from tha family of Lutes that was common in Ukraine and whose popularity spanned two and a half centuries from about 1690 to 1920.
We would like to argue, however, that the XVIII-th century lute tradition didn't simply disappear save for a few eccentrics.
It lived on in Eastern Europe, in the TORBAN, an instument that combined organological elements of Baroque Lute and Kobza-Bandura and is arguably the only heir to Baroque Lute in Europe, and to the lute European Lute tradition in general.
