"Torch Song Trilogy," based on a popular Broadway play by Harvey Fierstein, is an earnest, emotionally accurate, but seriously flawed drama.
Many moments in "Torch Song Trilogy," do ring true, however, despite its faults, and I suspect it is largely due to Fierstein brilliant performance.
"Torch Song Trilogy" is full of good intentions, and has a fair share of strong points, so it is especially disappointing that Fierstein hadn't changed some of the weaker elements in the screenplay.

"Torch Song Trilogy" is basically a movie about a man who slowly becomes more comfortable with himself.
As written and performed by Harvey Fierstein as a long-running stage hit, it was seen as a sort of nostalgic visit to the problems that gays had in the years before the horror of AIDS.
But "Torch Song Trilogy" is seen in a lot of specific scenes, in moments like the one where Arnold wakes up before Ed in the morning, dashes into the bathroom to make himself look as good as possible, and then jumps back into bed a second before the alarm goes off.

Torch Song Trilogy (1988) is the film version of the long-running, Tony Award-winning play by Harvey Fierstein.
The story chronicles nine years in the life of Arnold (Fierstein), a gay female impersonator who is coming to terms with being gay, aging, monogamy, the desire to have children, and the ever present need for love.
Torch Song Trilogy is a little dated, but overall it's a rich experience — due mostly to Fierstein's clever ear for dialogue and compassionate observations.

The dates given below are the dates from the film; the plays were set two or three years more recently, but New Line Cinema couldn't understand how a gay film in the mid-1980s could not mention AIDS, so Fierstein moved the film to before the AIDS crisis.
Each of the three acts tells a separate part of the life story of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing Jewish drag queen in New York City who starts the story with a soliloquy explaining his cynical disillusionment with love.
At the end of the act, however, Alan is killed in a homophobic attack.

With Torch Song the film, Fierstein has crafted his play into a fine screenplay for the most part, although there are some rough transitions in the film that perhaps worked better on the stage.
The strength of the film lies in Fierstein's conveyance of gay humor and pathos and in his focus on issues and situations revolving around being gay (or lesbian), such as coming out, homophobia, losing a lover, and anti-gay violence.
This, in itself, subverts the very anti-homophobic message Torch Song seems to be trying to convey.
