Tordesillas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tordesillas is a village and municipality in the province of Valladolid, part of the autonomous community of Castile-Leon in central Spain.
It was the site where the most famous Treaty of Tordesillas was concluded on 7 July 1494 between Spain and Portugal that divided the globe between the two kingdoms for purposes of colonisation under the principle of terra nullius.
It is also where the Spanish Queen Joanna of Castille was kept for the final years of her life because of her derangement, which earned her the name Juana la Loca 'the mad'.

TORDESILLAS, TREATY OF [Tordesillas, Treaty of], 1494, agreement signed at Tordesillas, Spain, by which Spain and Portugal divided the non-Christian world into two zones of influence.
In principle the treaty followed the papal bull issued in 1493 by Pope Alexander VI, which fixed the demarcation line along a circle passing 100 leagues W of the Cape Verde Islands and through the two poles.
However, the Treaty of Tordesillas shifted the demarcation line to a circle passing 370 leagues W of the Cape Verde Islands and thus gave Portugal a claim to Brazil.

Treaty of Tordesillas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The lands to the east would belong to Portugal and the lands to the west to Spain.
Because the Azores are north-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands, the resulting meridian was near 36°8'W. The Portuguese King John II was not happy, so he opened negotiations with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to move the line to the west.
Ironically, the meridian defined in the Treaty of Tordesillas was only a little further west than that in Inter caetera.
