Amos was at the forefront of a number of female singer-songwriters in the early 1990s and is noteworthy as one of the few modern pop music stars to use a piano as her primary instrument.
Amos did not comment on this until 11 years later, citing it as her impetus to not return to Australia during a tour between 1995 and 2005.
Amos has commented on a variety of roles from this era that she auditioned for but did not receive; notably she was offered the role played by Lea Thompson in the notorious flop Howard the Duck, but the offer was retracted when Thompson expressed interest.

With her New Age earth mother persona and constant references to Mary Magdalene, sex and faeries, you might be tempted to write Tori Amos off as the latest pop-culture fad.
Tori's first band flopped, and it's easy to hear why: producer Joe Chiccarelli was so enamored of his synth-heavy, genre-neutral, overdone L.A. hipness, he buried all her songwriting and performing idiosyncracies.
Amos has none of her usual energy, spinning out deadly dull "impressionistic" tracks with unusually bland singing and almost no soloing: the ten-minute version of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is the worst offender (ever notice how hard it is to make a covers album without including a Beatles song?).

I know that this has divided opinion for many Tori Amos fans, but I would like to point out that this is an album of growers, you will probably not appreciate many on the first listen, but do persevere, because some tracks are phenomenal.

I got turned on to Tori Amos several years ago when her song "Crucify" was getting a lot of play.
Tori comes out and says "hi." Then she positions herself, begins to play, we get the nod, and the flashes fly for about two minutes.
Amos made a graceful entrance and proceeded to play the shit out of her piano.

I brought along Stu Gotz who is a pretty big Tori fan, and I relieved him of his review duties in case he might get distracted by also being a guy (I feared his head would either explode or he would get whiplash as he spun around in circles happy he was in the minority).
Now one thing I found out early was that this show was at one of the largest venues Tori has ever played, that she played one of my favoritist small venues at one time, namely Schuba's in Chicago, and if she thought about it much she would pee in her pants.
Tori Amos' show had disco balls, had bubbles, had my musical senses mostly bombarded, and damn she can build a song to a crescendo better than just about anyone I have ever seen.
