The Tornado was ultimately selected to meet the UK requirement for an air defence fighter in 1971, it first flew in October 1979, with the first production aircraft flying in March 1984.
The mainstay of the strike/attack force is the Tornado GR4.
Tornado squadrons at RAF Bruggen were the last RAF flying units to leave Germany when the station was handed back to the host nation into mid-2001.

The design authority for the Tornado is Panavia, the tri-national consortium which comprises British Aerospace, DASA of Germany and the Italian firm Alenia.
The Tornado GR1 strike/attack aircraft is capable of carrying a wide range of conventional stores, including the JP233 anti-airfield weapon, the ALARM anti-radar missile, and laser-guided bombs, as well as the WE-177 nuclear variable-yield free-fall bomb, first introduced into service in 1966.
There are currently some 45 GR4 and GR4As in RAF service and by the end of Stage 2 of the modification program in mid 2000, there were about 60 aircraft with this figure rising to 80 by the end of the year.

The Tornado is a twin-engine aircraft with a top speed of 1,452 miles per hour, twice the speed of sound, and has a mission range of 863 miles.
Tornados were part of a mixed squadron (including Jaguars and Harriers) sent to the Gulf in January to take part in training exercises.

The Tornado GR.1 entered service in 1981 and the programme to upgrade 142 aircraft to GR.4 standard by BAE Systems was approved in 1994 and by mid-January 2002, 107 had been delivered.
The Tornado GR.1 was developed as a Cold War warrior and the aircraft and sensors were optimised for low-level.
With the unpredictable nature of warfare this tactic may still have to be used and it is worth noting that the Tornado is still the only RAF ground-attack aircraft capable of the full spectrum of operations at low-level, be it day or night and in all weathers.

In September 2006 it was reported that the Saudi government signed a contract worth £2.5 billion ($4.7 billion) with BAE Systems to upgrade possibly 80 aircraft in the Saudi Air Force fleet which it wants to keep until 2020.

"We can confirm that a Tornado GR4 aircraft from RAF Marham returning from an operational mission was engaged near the Kuwaiti border by a Patriot missile battery," British military spokesman Captain Al Lockwood told reporters at Central Command headquarters in Qatar.
The Tornado loss is the third deadly incident for British forces since the war began, with a death count now at 16.

It in fact turns out to be a vast swirling flock of crows (that's why it has to be dawn) and the Tornado has a bird strike.

FOAS, or the Future Offensive Air System, is the name given to a number of concept options which were being examined for the UK Ministry of Defence's requirement to replace the capabilities provided by the Tornado GR4 aircraft.
