Torne Valley is part of the Ramapo River watershed, a federally designated sole source aquifer that provides clean drinking water to over 2 million people in Rockland County, New York and northern New Jersey.
Torne Valley is a critical treasure of the Highlands that should be protected.

 NYNJTC: Comments on Torne Valley
We have 20-30 miles of hiking trails near the Valley — to the top of the Torne, the Pulpit, the Russian Bear and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail on Nordkopf Mountain, one of the very first trails built by the Trail Conference in Harriman.
We will build more trails in the new Torne Valley addition to the state park, making connections to the existing trails, but only if the power plants are not built.
Protecting Torne Valley is not just about protecting plant and animal species, it is about nurturing the human species, the human spirit that is so connected to nature through hiking or other activities.

This study deals with the impact by modernisation and nationalism on the ethnicity and national identity among the Finnish speaking minority in the Torne Valley in the north of Sweden.
When following the shift of language use among the Torne Valley people from 1890 to 1930 the study shows that the language policy in school played an essential role for the shift, but the difference between women and men also reveals the impact from the society outside school.
The stable pattern of inter-marriage between the Swedish Torne Valley and Finland 1860-1919 reveals a cultural continuity which stands in contrast to the dramatical political events of the time.

The River Torne, together with the Rivers Muonio and Könkämä, became the national border between Sweden and Finland with the establishment of peace in 1809.
The population of the Swedish Torne Valley totalled about 47 000 at the beginning of the 1900’s and by the 1930’s had increased to about 68 000 (Groth, Östen "Ur Norrbottens historia" 1984).
The establishment of a school system took longer in the valley because of a shortage of teachers, poor economy, bad harvest years, and general poverty in the north of Sweden.

Sample SW-5 collected from Torne Brook upstream of the landfill and considered to be representative of background conditions, demonstrated the presence of vinyl chloride and oil and grease (1.1 mg/L).
On March 17, 1992, water from a nearby residence on Torne Brook Road (PW-2) was sampled by the NYS DOH and analyzed for VOCs, semi-volatile compounds, and metals.
The water table surface closely parallels the surface topography and shallow groundwater generally flows towards Torne Brook which is a topographic low between the landfill and lands between the brook and the Ramapo River.

A power company yesterday withdrew a proposal for a gas-fired plant in the Torne Valley of Rockland County that had drawn widespread protest from environmentalists and politicians who said it would endanger wildlife and water supplies.
American National had countered that the plant would be among the safest and cleanest ever built and would have a negligible effect on the aquifer.
The Public Service Commission, the agency that oversees the state's electric utilities, said the loss of the power plants in the Torne Valley would not hinder the state's mission to bolster its energy resources.

They helped to form a Coalition with other civic and environmental groups in March of 2000 to save the Torne Valley, the site of two proposed electric power plants and a quarry.
Located less than two miles from downtown Suffern, the Torne Valley is home to a "federally designated sole source aquifer" that provides drinking water to tens of thousands of residents in Rockland County and northern New Jersey.
After months of meetings, lobbying, demonstrations (including a “Rally to Save the Valley” co-organized by the SCA in which 500 people marched down Suffern’s Lafayette Avenue,) a candlelight vigil, petition-drives, and a massive community effort, the Save Torne Valley Coalition prevailed.

In 1736 he was given a state grant to lead a meridian expedition up to the Torne Valley in order to determine whether Isaac Newton’s theory that the Earth was flattened at the poles was correct.
It is possible that the Swedish scientist Anders Celsius persuaded the Frenchmen to choose the Torne Valley in particular for their surveying.
The expedition lasted from June 1736 to June 1737, and succeeded in demonstrating that Newton’s theory indeed is correct.

Rockland County, the smallest county in the state, already has two power plants, and Torne Valley should not be the site for another.
The addition of power plants in the Torne Valley, a sole-source aquifer, will put our already strained resources under additional pressure.
