The first of the two park proposals, which encompasses most of the Torngat mountains on the Nunavik side, is located east of Kangiqsualujjuaq.
The mountain range, known to the Inuit as the house of the spirits (Tuurngait in proper Inuttitut), rises at the head of the scenic Koroc River valley to act as a natural frontier between Nunavik and Labrador.
Mount Iberville, in the Torngat range, is the highest peak in eastern Canada at 1,646 metres.

I've been looking into it for several years and one of the debatable issues for myself was the question of bringing a rifle or not as protection from the existing threat of polar bears in the Torngats.
My decision is to worry about increasing my skill at mountaineering (several climbes are technical) and not worry about the wildlife - except I would love to see some of the larger species (Caribou, Wolves, etc.) in their natural habitat - something not possible in the lower 48.
A colleague working in the Torngats in 1978 was forced to kill a fl bear that charged them at their camp; lucky that he killed the bear with one slug, because his old 303 army rifle jammed after that first shot.

The Memorandum of Agreement for a National Park Reserve in the Torngat Mountains, between Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador, sets out the terms and conditions by which the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has agreed to transfer the administration and control of the lands to establish the national park reserve to Canada.
This Agreement, which is required as part of the LILCA, also establishes a framework for the co-operative management of the park reserve by Parks Canada and Inuit.

Mont Jacques-Cartier in the Chic-Choc range of southern Quebec rises to 4160 feet, but after that the vast reaches of the areas north of the Saint Lawrence are a blank spot in the mind of most hikers.
Bear in mind, though, that the ususal standard for northeast peakbagging is 200 feet (actually 160 feet of clean prominence), and that there are only 62 peaks in all of New England and New York over 4000 feet high and with over 500 feet of prominence.
The Torngats are rugged, remote, and have not been thoroughly explored.

It is very remote, but I was curious if anybody has seen any interesting formations or know of any climbers who have checked the area out.
Jim Bridwell told me a few years ago that nearby Newfoundland is a mecca of big wall climbs that most have never been climbed ever.
