The owners of the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers[?], Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs[?], and Toronto Arenas decided to form a new league in order to exclude Edward J. Livingston, owner of the NHA Toronto Blueshirts[?] franchise from being involved in their future hockey operations.
The remaining three teams completed the inaugural season, with Toronto winning the league championship, then beating the Vancouver Millionaires of the PHCL in a best of five series to claim the Stanley Cup.

Livingstone had eventually negotiated a deal with Toronto Arena Gardens to take control of Blueshirts' day-to-day operations and if the NHA to operate (which the other owners desperate kick Livingstone out tried to prevent) Livingstone eventually regain sole control of the team.
On November 26 1917 in Montreal's Windsor Hotel the National League was formed with the Canadiens the the Senators the Bulldogs and the newly-renamed Toronto Arenas as its founding members.

Now owned by M.J. Quinn the Blue Shirts were 1 of 2 teams in Toronto to join the NHA playing at the Arena Gardens, which was the first arena to use artificial ice.
The other owners decided to avoid the headaches of court and form a whole new league the next season to be called the NHL leaving Livingstone and his franchise in now a one team league.
However in one of sports greatest injustices the Arena officially owned the team, and even though most of their team was the players from Livingstone's Blue Shirts, it was considered a separate team, prompting several lawsuits which threatened the future of professional hockey.
