classical music - andante - toronto symphony teeters on the edge of ruin
For Canadians, the news was both shocking and routine: the orchestra of the country's premier city will go belly-up if the musicians, board and what's left of management at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra don't agree on a restructuring plan by this Friday, 26 October.
Crises in Canadian orchestras have become routine since the mid-1980s, when federal and provincial governments, which had historically been strong supporters of the country's arts organizations, cut back drastically on their financial assistance.
In the press release announcing his resignation, Smith declared that "the internal culture of the [TSO] is probably beyond repair" — a reference, one assumes, to the chronic mistrust between the musicians and management and to a bloated board (about 60 people) whose members aren't even required to purchase season tickets.

The Toronto Symphony has had more than its share of apparent zombies over the years, particularly in the string sections, but under Oundjian even some of the sitting dead are beginning to look re-energized.
The strings are a symphony's backbone and his credentials as former first violinist of one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles, the Tokyo String Quartet, have given him the background and impetus to improve the string sound.
Meanwhile, with sister orchestras in Calgary and Winnipeg in trouble, and others across the country barely holding their deficits at bay, the Canadian orchestral world is increasingly looking to Toronto as a model for recovery.
