It opened in 1974 as the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo and is owned by the City of Toronto; the word 'Metropolitan' was dropped from its name when the cities of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto were merged to form the present-day City of Toronto.
The zoo is accessible from Highway 401 located two km to the south, or by TTC buses from Scarborough Centre station.
In 1998, with the amalgamation of the Metro Municipalities, the Zoo was officially renamed the Toronto Zoo.

In 1976, the Metro Toronto Zoo, in Toronto, Canada, began operating an automated guideway transit (AGT) system, a monorail-type vehicle to carry visitors from one 'domain' to another.
The ride was popular, but an accident in 1994 injured 20 passengers and led the zoo to halt operations.
AGT was sold as the new means of personal transport in 1970s, but the monorail systems were only popular in use at airports and amusement parks in the United States.
